FAQ
I'll try to cover my most asked questions about art stuff here
Hello!
My name is Felicia and I am a traditional artist (formerly an industrial designer) based in the Bay Area. I have shown in galleries from Los Angeles to Tokyo, but I'm really just trying to stay home and draw in my sketchbooks. I do not freelance regularly and am not open for commissions.
FAQ
1. What paper do you use?
- I primarily use Strathmore Toned Tan. They sell it in sketchbooks as well as rolls. For water color I use the same paper but at a heavier weight which you can find in pads at Blick. I sometimes use a Daler Rowney sketchbook called Earthbound but it is no longer available in the USA (you can find it in the UK I think).
2. What supplies are you using?
- All of my sketchbook drawings are done primarily with Copic Sketch markers. They are alcohol based and blend really well, but they are not archival and may fade in light over time. I also use Caran D'ache Luminance color pencils and water colors from various brands.
3. How can I purchase an original piece?
- I currently only sell originals through galleries. I have 1-2 solo shows a year along with group gallery shows that I announce on Instagram and Patreon. Patreon members get early access to preview lists as well as purchasing prioirty.
4. Do you take commissions?
- No, sorry!
5. How did you develop your art style?
- I never had any intention to create my own style, I just draw a lot and I draw what feels good and over time my style kind of solidified itself. It's still ever changing, but I don't have any real goals with it.
6. Can you explain your characters?
- The main fleshy little character you see is pretty much just a placeholder for a human. Think of it as a stick figure. I find artwork is more relatable when there is a character in a piece. Most people are empathetic so the character helps them channel emotions and imagine what the chracter is experiencing.
- The little black blob originally began as a stomach. Whenever I was having bad anxiety, it would affect my stomach, I also have IBS. Whenever I was having tummy troubles I would draw the blob inside the character's body. Over time I managed my anxiety better and my mom thought the blob was a cat so I've drawn it around in the background still. I've learned to live with it.
- All the other repeating characters are nameless and were originally drawn in for either a pop of color or contrast.
7. What made to switch from industrial design to illustration?
- Money. I never intended to do art full time, I had a pretty cool job working as an industrial designer at IDEO for their Food Studio. The pandemic changed my job experience for the worse (couldn't travel and eat anymore) but also blew up my illustration work. I started earning more money through that than my ID job so I made the shift over to full time artist to have more control.
8. How can I contact you?
- Sending me a DM through Instagram is your best bet. I skim messages once a day and will reply to messages I am willing to engage. If you message me, I will see it but I may not reply (no offense! I just have very little mental space for social media).
Other things to note:
I no longer sell originals drawn with marker because it is not archival. All original gallery pieces are done in water color and color pencil, but I still use markers for personal sketchbook work.
